Latest issue of Culturelink Review appears

Culturelink logoCULTURELINK based at the Institute for International Relations, Zagreb, Croatia, has forwarded news of the appearance of issue 37 of the Culturelink Review which is devoted to redefining cultural identities, cultural industries and technological convergence. This was the subject of the third in a series of postgraduate courses entitled Redefining Cultural Identities, which has taken place every May for the last three years at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik. The aim of the course was to open discussion and research on the new influences that shape contemporary cultural identities in south-east Europe. A welcome development, since in the latter region processes that turn cultural creativity into industrial production were hitherto neither sufficiently analysed nor statistically documented.

New Publications from the Dutch Digital Preservation Testbed Initiative

logo of digitale duurzaamheidHow can you preserve e-mails that contain important agreements? If asked by Parliament, can just any ministerial employee find and retrieve important records created and saved by someone else? Is a digital permit still readable after ten years? The Digital Preservation Testbed is researching the answers to these questions for all Dutch governmental organisations. The Testbed is experimenting with digital information in a unique E-lab to determine the best methods of long-term preservation, not just for now, but also over the next ten to one hundred years.

Nationaal Archief and ECPA in the GRIP of a New Preservation Gateway

nationaal archief logoThe Nationaal Archief and the European Commission on Preservation and Access (ECPA) have officially launched GRIP, Gateway for Resources and Information on Preservation. GRIP is an Internet gateway, presenting a core of accessible and recent materials selected by experts which provides an introduction to a great many aspects of preservation. Resources selected for inclusion in GRIP aim to be of interest to a wide audience, including preservation professionals, collection managers, policy makers, librarians, archivists, museum curators, audiovisual specialists and information technologists.

Currently the GRIP database contains 2248 references to literature, organisations, projects, training activities and discussion lists. It can be searched by category, keywords (descriptors), keyword combinations and free search. Since all references are connected to a thesaurus system, users can browse through GRIP by using related, narrow or broader terms. In many cases the references in GRIP are annotated with short comments by the experts that selected them.

A team, consisting of experts at the Nationaal Archief, European Commission on Preservation and Access and the ECPA Scientific Advisory Committee, will maintain and regularly update the GRIP database. GRIP also intends to expand the number of on-line publications, providing an open platform for preservation literature.

E-mail - 31% addresses change per year

@ symbolEl.pub reports a new study from NFO WorldGroup which shows that 31% of US Internet users change their e-mail address each year and that 53% of those people lose touch with friends and business contacts as a result. This will no doubt explain to many of you why the main source of lost members on mail lists are simply bounces that give a "user name unknown" or similar message.

El.pub stated that the main way it loses members from its mail lists is simply due to people changing address (usually company or university) and failing to report their new address, even when they have been subscribed for several years. According to the study, loss of contact with valued Web sites and newsletters is the most frequent consequence of changing address. In the US, Return Path provides an e-mail change of address service that can reconnect users with friends and business contacts. (Source: Newstream)

The WEDELMUSIC2002 Conference

Where?:Darmstadt, Germany
When?:11-12 December, 2002

The International Conference on Web Delivering of Music 2002 aims to address new ways to distribute music to larger audiences. The impact of these developments on cultural heritage will be considered, together with their availability to people with limited access to classical archives or libraries. In particular, proposals and solutions benefiting visually-impaired people are encouraged, to let everybody access this large and hidden cultural heritage. Tools for impaired people will contribute to broadening music playing and enjoyment.

The conference focuses on both the challenges posed by Internet in its role as a major player for business changes and music distribution, as well as opportunities as a new infrastructure for enabling technology. In addition, this conference seeks to promote discussion and interaction between researchers, practitioners, developers and users of tools, technology transfer experts, and project managers. Of particular interest is the exchange of concepts, prototypes, research ideas, and other results which could both contribute to the academic arena and also benefit business and the industrial community. WEDELMUSIC-2002 will bring together a variety of participants to address not only different technical issues, but also the impact of Internet on the preservation of cultural heritage.
