Position?: Professor for Library Science teaching Digital Media

Qualified candidates must have teaching and research experience in technology and management of digital publication of all types of media for an information organization, preferably with knowledge of the development of digital libraries. We expect the candidate to contribute by teaching both library and information science, as well as conventional techniques for information and communication media. Cooperation in teaching such topics as digital archiving, document management and innovative information systems is also desired.

We expect outstanding commitment to the academic administration of the Department and to the ongoing issues concerning curriculum reform and continued development of the courses of study. Thus, it is taken for granted that you are very much interested in new forms of university teaching as, for example, online teaching. The courses at the Fachhochschule Potsdam shall increasingly be held in English.

Requirements for this position include a relevant university degree, outstanding job experience in the form of projects, scientific publications and specific practical experience in the desired teaching areas mentioned above. The position to be filled by 1 April 2001, initially for a limited period of 1.5 years. This is a civil service position in the public sector (im Angestelltenverhältnis). The salary is analogous to C2.

Position?: EARL Information Manager
Company?: EARL (Electronic Access to Resources in Libraries), the Consortium for Public Library Networking

Job Purpose

To be responsible for the management and dissemination of information to EARL's Public Library Partners in addition to Strategic Partners from Government, Academic and Professional bodies.
To be responsible for the overall co-ordination of the EARL Office, supported by the Networked Services Manager.

Key Tasks

Day to day responsibility for the maintenance and development of EARL's Networked Services, including the provision of a technical support service to users of those services.
Maintenance of EARL's website and other sites hosted on the EARL server. Co-ordination of Ask a Librarian (http://www.earl.org.uk/ask), EARL's National Electronic Enquiry Service.
Support the EARL's Information Manager with general administrative and organisational duties.
Participate and support the work of the EARL Research and Development Co-ordinator in ongoing and future research projects including the UK Electronic Library and the Genealogy Portal, Routes 2 Roots.

Person Specification

Web authoring skills. Knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript and CGI would be advantageous though not essential.
Knowledge of web accessibility issues and standards advantageous. *
bility to work well under pressure, prioritise workloads and be able to work to tight deadlines essential.
Flexible approach to working: balancing the ability to work effectively in a small team with the ability to work effectively without supervision, demonstrating a high level of self motivation and initiative essential.
Excellent written and oral communication skills essential. A keen interest in public library networking and an understanding of the People's Network project highly desirable.
Qualification in library and information science or equivalent experience preferred.

The post is a full time 12-month fixed term contract (renewable). Salary will be negotiable depending on experience.
