Cultivate Interactive Issue 2: Editorial

Hello and welcome to issue 2 of the Cultivate Interactive Web magazine. Thanks for all the feedback you have sent in, we are glad to hear that you are finding the magazine interesting and informative. If you have any comments, be they positive or negative (but still constructive!), just send them in to the editor's email address at the bottom of this page.

In this issue we continue to explore areas of interest to the Digital Cultural Community and attempt to provide insight into the DIGICULT programme. We are featuring two articles on the long running arguments surrounding Machine Translation (MT), the automation of language translation. The issue of translation is particularly pertinent to a pan-European magazine like Cultivate Interactive. One article has been written by Alastair Lindsay of Worldlingo.com, the online translation service we currently use in the magazine.

In a follow-up to the last issue's article on the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Helpdesk, Alexander Weir considers the achievements of IPR during their two years of operation and reflects on the new community patent regulation. Daniel Thérond introduces the HEREIN project, a heritage policy monitoring project which allows users access to an overview of the legal, administrative and financial framework of the heritage sector in different countries. The digital future of museums and current political, economic, social, technical and organisational trends are considered in articles from Suzanne Keene, David Anderson and Neil Thomson. Other contributions include discussion of Public Netbase t0, its international Success and recent struggles with Austria's new right-wing government and an explanation of how the Renaissance Library Calendar came about.

The DIGICULT projects covered this month are CULTIVATE, TOURBOT, VAKHUM, RENAISSANCE and BRAVA.

The Cultivate Interactive Poster display at EVANews of Cultivate Interactive's arrival has spread far and wide. As part of the dissemination process mentions of Cultivate Interactive have appeared nationally, in publications including the Library Association Record and the Guardian and at Information Days in European cities, and internationally as Web page links. In this issue we have included a new section that profiles some of the sites that are linking to us [1]. Above you can see a poster display on Cultivate Interactive given at the Electronic Imaging and the Visual Arts (EVA) conference in Edinburgh in July [2].

For those of you who are new to submitting proposals for projects to the European Commission we are hoping to provide more 'how to articles' in the future. The 4th Call for fixed deadline proposals under the IST Programme opened on 25 July and will close in two weeks on 31 October 2000. The 5th Call was announced during the second week of October and doesn't close until January 2001. This Call includes Action Line 3.5.1, 'Working groups, and dissemination and awareness actions' which mentions cultural objects. If you are interested in submitting a proposal the WorkProgramme for 2000 [3] includes details of all Action Lines, when the Calls will be and what will be in them. There are also opportunities in the IST programme to submit proposals for certain projects under Continuous Submission Scheme, for more information on this see the WorkProgramme site. Up to date information is usually posted to the lis-european programmes list [4].

The CORDIS site is the official site for information on Calls [5] but for a lay persons guide to proposals try the UKISHELP site [6]. This is the DTI funded site for the EC Information Society programmes, not just the IST Programme and it has very close links with the EC.

Enjoy Cultivate Interactive!
